Lectora 12: Install Guide


Getting Started Checklist 

  1. A copy of the Lectora setup file
    You will need a copy of the Lectora Inspire or Lectora Publisher setup file. You can download the trial versions from our website: Click here.

*Remember to note where you save the Lectora 12 setup file on your computer. 

  1. Your Serial Number
    Lectora serial numbers are a 15 character-long mix of numbers and letters. Please contact your Account Representative if you have not received your serial number.
  2. Ability to “Run as Administrator” or login as Windows Administrator
    Lectora must be installed by right-clicking the setup file and choosing “Run as Administrator” from the menu. Even if your personal account has administrative privileges, you will still need to right-click and choose “Run as Administrator”. Please contact your IT Support if you do not have access to run the installer with the Windows Administrator account.
  3. Reboot your computer and close any running programs
    Please reboot your computer and make sure to close any open programs. In particular, check that SnagIt, Camtasia, Flypaper, and any Microsoft Office applications (including Outlook) are closed. Many programs will run in the background in your system tray. You can close them by right-clicking their icons in the system tray.
  4. Re-Installing or Moving Lectora
    Your Lectora serial number can only be used on one computer at a time. If you need to re-install Lectora or move Lectora to another computer you must uninstall it from the current computer first. Use Add/Remove Programs within your Control Panel while connected to the Internet to uninstall Lectora.

System Requirements

Make sure you meet the following system requirements before you install Lectora:

  • Intel® or AMD® class processor
  • 500MB free RAM
  • 1GB free hard disk space for the application
  • Microsoft® .NET Framework 4.0 SP1 (required to install Camtasia Studio® and Flypaper™)
  • A monitor with a minimum resolution of 1024x768


Lectora runs on the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows® XP
  • Microsoft Windows Vista®
  • Microsoft Windows 7
  • Microsoft Windows 8


Camtasia and Snagit - included with Lectora Inspire - only support Windows 7 and Windows 8. 

Courses created for the web require Internet Explorer® 8.0 or newer or any version of Mozilla Firefox™, Google Chrome™ or Apple Safari®. 

Titles published for offline use can be written to external media such as CD-ROMs and Flash drives and require one of the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows XP
  • Microsoft Windows Vista
  • Microsoft Windows 7
  • Microsoft Windows 8

Existing Lectora Installations

If a previous installation of Lectora is detected on your system, Lectora will prompt you to uninstall. Click Yes to uninstall your current version and install Lectora 12. If you have an existing version of Lectora that you would like to keep on your system, click No. Note: if you click Yes Lectora 12 will overwrite your previous version.

To continue using your existing version of Lectora, you will need to specify a different location from the provided default. Specify a new install location in the Destination Folder field. Note that if you do not change the installation location, Lectora 12 will replace your existing version of Lectora and you will be unable to continue to use your existing version.


Trial Users

If you have an active Lectora 12 trial:

  1. If Lectora is open, click the Help drop-down in the upper-right corner and select Register.
  2. Provide your purchased license key and contact information to register the product.
  3. Click Activate Now. You'll receive a confirmation when your activation is valid.


If you have an expired Lectora 12 trial:

  1. Follow the on-screen instructions displayed when you attempt to run Lectora.
  2. Provide your purchased license key and contact information to register the product.
  3. Click Activate Now. You'll receive a confirmation when your activation is valid.


Note: You will need to run Lectora as an administrator for registration to complete.
