Providing alternative text when ALT tags cannot be used

If you are unable to provide a succinct description of an object within an ALT tag, there are other means of providing alternative text. These include:

Providing a textual caption

You can include a visible text block on the page in proximity to the object you need to describe. The text block should include a text-only description of the object. Ensure that the object itself uses an empty ALT tag. The text will serve as the only description for the object.

Providing a hidden description

You can layer a text block containing a description of the object underneath the object itself. While the text will not be visible to the user, it will still be recognized by a screen reader. Ensure that the object itself uses an empty ALT tag. The text will serve as the only description for the object.

Displaying a description in a pop-up window

You can also make the object a clickable object and launch a pop-up window containing the object’s textual description.
