Scotiabank is one of North America’s leading financial institutions, and Canada’s most international bank. Through its team of 68,000 employees, Scotiabank Group and its affiliates offer a diverse range of products and services, including personal, commercial, corporate and investment banking, to almost 14.6 million customers in some 50 countries around the world.
With such a distributed workforce, Scotiabank quickly recognized the need for consistent training and began creating eLearning in 1995. Initially, eLearning was delivered via CD-ROMs, but in 2002, during the implementation of their Learning Management System (LMS), Scotiabank discovered Lectora authoring software. Using Lectora enabled Scotiabank to evolve their online training into cutting-edge, easily accessible eLearning.
John Brisbin, Senior Manager, Training Technology at Scotiabank, knew that Lectora was the right tool for the organization because it’s AICC and SCORM compliant, integrates seamlessly with their LMS, and provides several 508 compliance accessibility features.
“In just a few days, anyone can learn how to create eLearning with Lectora.”
Brisbin was thrilled with the ease of use of Lectora. “In just a few days, anyone can learn how to create eLearning with Lectora. Once you learn the basics of Lectora, your possibilities for creating engaging eLearning are endless.”
Scotiabank found that Lectora is sophisticated enough for advanced developers, yet simple enough for those that are new to eLearning development. Creating templates in Lectora has enabled Scotiabank to have new developers create even more robust content. “Our novice developers can open up a template and have the majority of the layout and design completed. Then, all they have to do is plug in the content and add some engaging elements,” added Brisbin. This has helped Scotiabank to create eLearning both quickly and efficiently.
“The translation tool in Lectora is great! We were able to reduce costs with external vendors because of this time-saving feature.”
In addition, Brisbin also notes that creating courses in other languages with Lectora is simple. “The translation tool in Lectora is great! We were able to reduce costs with external vendors because of this time-saving feature.” Currently, Scotiabank delivers courses in English, French and Spanish.
Scotiabank has multiple departments that are involved in training within the organization. There is a centralized learning group for all eLearning standards, best practices and bank-wide learning, as well as many other departments which specialize in particular business-line learning functions.
In addition to the in-house learning development teams at Scotiabank, the company also utilizes external vendors to create training. “We make it a standard for our external vendors to create our courses in Lectora because we know it’s standard’s-based (AICC & SCORM), can have an easy upgrade path for content, and we can easily update or make changes in-house,” said Brisbin. “As a result of working with us, many of our vendors are now using Lectora as their tool of choice.”
Due to the satisfaction with Lectora, it’s now the principle authoring tool at Scotiabank. To date, the company has developed more than 800 courses – 99% of which were developed in Lectora. With an unbelievable 95% completion rate, all 68,000 Scotiabank employees have taken at least 1-2 Lectora courses. Training is available on almost every type of topic you can think of – from regulatory training to sales knowledge, product knowledge, systems training, and more.

Scotiabank has a plan to create many more courses with Lectora over the next few years. “Lectora will continue to be a mainstay and core piece of our eLearning plans for the future,” said Brisbin.
