We love when our customers win awards for projects created with Lectora®. Kettering Health Network is one of those customers—they were presented with the 2016 HealthSteam Excellence Through Innovation Award for Authoring & Instructional Design for the eLearning courses created using Lectora.

Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking with Bernadette Sacksteder, Human Resources Specialist: HealthStream & Orientation, at Kettering Health Network. She shared how they used Lectora to create an interactive, engaging Corporate Integrity course with branching. Below is a photo from the course—it had a forest adventure theme, where employees could choose branches of the trail to explore in order to complete the training.

Let’s look at the case study to find out how Kettering Health Network created the award-winning training:

Profile

Kettering Health Network (KHN) is a not-for-profit network of eight hospitals, Kettering College, and over 120 outpatient facilities in southwest Ohio. KHN provides access to high quality maternity case, state-of-the-art cancer fighting technology, Ohio’s leading heart hospital, and revolutionary brain and spine surgery.

Bernadette Sacksteder, Human Resources Specialist: HealthStream & Orientation, has been using Lectora Inspire, the authoring tool by Trivantis®, to create training at Kettering Health Network for almost 2 years. Lectora had been recommended to KHN by HealthStream, the healthcare organization-specific learning management system that KHN uses. In addition, KHN uses ReviewLink™, an online review tool also by Trivantis.

Challenge

Kettering Health Network was looking for ways to build eLearning courses that were more engaging, robust, and appealing than their existing training. They also needed to create custom courses on training topics specific to KHN, as opposed to general eLearning courses. For example, for one course they worked with the KHN pharmacy department to provide specific training information.

In order to work at KHN, employees are required to regularly complete mandatory training courses on subjects like confidentiality, sanitation practices, and more. By making these courses engaging, KHN intends to increase employee participation and completion.

Bernadette needed to take an existing, boring KHN Performance Improvement course and make it more engaging. She also needed to revamp the orientation experience for new employees, plus create new courses from scratch: KHN Corporate Integrity and KHN Handwashing. Much of the content in this training was specific to Kettering Health Network.

“We knew we were going to create the new training with Lectora,” said Bernadette, “But the question was: how cool are we going to make it?”
